Growing Marijuana Outdoors
With most plants there are seasons, especially marijuana. When growing outdoors you need to know when the time is right to plant, and harvest.
Specific strains do better outdoors, know your strains, ask for outdoor resilient genetics.
There is a noticeable difference in indoor and outdoor grown cannabis, the aromas and flavors of outdoor are much stronger, with a much better high. Outdoor plants tend to grow pretty massive, as nothing beats the sun for growth.
Whether you’re starting from Clone, or seed you need to factor this into your grow time. Seeds take longer and should be planted in the spring. Flowering should begin after summer solstice, make sure the cold nights are over when planting marijuana, as frost will kill most young plants/seedlings.
If you are growing from clones, you can start in the summer, during the summer months the plants will grow tall, and be ready for flowering by summer solstice.
So when do you harvest marijuana?
There are differnent flowering times for different strains, some strains can take over 2 months to be ready.
Harvesting usually begins in the fall/autumn. The plants start to look a little down, the overall health seems to decline, the leaves begin to yellow and die off, with this, you should be ready to harvest.
Flowering time
Indica: harvest after 8 weeks of flowering
Sativa: harvest after 10 weeks of flowering
Autoflower: 10 weeks from seedling to bud
Pistils
50-70% brown – young, light marijuana
70-90% brown – ripe, heavy marijuana
90-100% brown – sharp, heavy marijuana
Trichomes
Clear trichomes – wait a bit longer
Milky white/amber trichomes – ready for harvest
All Amber trichomes – overripe
Use a magnifying glass when looking for trichomes in your buds, they are the like tiny droplets that are all glittery and filled with resin. If you are seeing them this way, you will be able to harvest at the perfect time.
